Brimstone Hotel, Lake District
Posted on 31 May 2017
Located at the very heart of one of the United Kingdom's most beautiful destinations, the Lake District is Brimstone; a luxury spa hotel that allows guests to make the most from the incredible surroundings. From a day of mountain climbing to a weekend of calming and rejuvenating spa treatments, this hotel really does have it all, providing an experience that guest will never forget. During a fresh Spring morning, I arrived at the hotel for a long weekend's break to experience for myself the services, design, and facilities that Brimstone had to offer.
One of my favorite places in the hotel was the Reading Room, a space outside of the hotel suites where guests can relax, watch television and enjoy a glass of wine. Decorated in muted tones with contemporary purple and silver accents, the space has a welcoming feel that allows guests to sit back, relax and socialise with one another, away from the busier restaurant and bar areas. Throughout the day, the Reading Room offers a range of food and drink that includes tea and coffees in the morning to wine, cheeses, and cakes in the evening. Small touches that make the world of difference, making it feel like a home from home.
My first night was spent in the ultra luxurious Mezzanine Loft Suite. The gallery level was dedicated entirely to an open plan bedroom with adjoining en-suite bathroom. The bedroom contained a king sized bed, dressed in all the finest fabrics, finishes and accessories for a luxurious night's sleep. The layout of the gallery also allowed guests to look down into the main living space and across to the balcony, keeping a connection with the lower level and the outdoors, whilst providing privacy for those that want to sneak away and relax. The lower floor contained the main living area, complete with log fire, flat screen television, and dining table. There was even the surprise of a large free standing bath hidden under the stairs, revealed by sliding back two large wooden doors.
The second night was spent in one of the hotel's Plush Rooms. Containing all the comforts and luxuries seen in the Mezzanine Suite, the Plush Room is set out across one single floor and leads out to an impressive balcony. The room's design and layout made waking up complete paradise with direct views out into the forests and grounds, making you feel connected with nature, even in a luxury environment. Every room at Brimstone contains its own private balcony accessed via folding glass doors. These floor to ceiling glass doors are able to slide back entirely, opening the room up to the natural world and transforming the feeling of the space. Whether you wrap up on the balcony in Spring to watch the sunset or enjoy the sounds of nature during the heat of the Summer sun, these large balconies help create that perfect start and finish to each day.
If it is fine dining and creative cocktails that you are after, the Stove Restaurant and Bar has it covered. Located just a few minutes walk from the hotel, the restaurant encompasses the beauty of the Lake District through the soft tones and natural materials classic to the area. Features such as wooden the front desk and decorative display tables have been sourced and crafted locally to further reference the importance of this iconic British location. This vast space has been divided into smaller rooms and sections, allowing guests to enjoy a personal and intimate setting that helps to enhance the dining experience. Surrounded by glass walls containing fine wines, beautiful crystalware, and the signature wood burning fireplace, the restaurant and staff provide a service with all the luxuries that you would expect.
Saving the best to last, a real sell for many visitors is the spa and leisure facilities on offer. During my stay, I was lucky enough to make the most of these facilities and get the full Brimstone experience. My first day was spent hiking in the great outdoors, exploring the valleys and summits of the picturesque landscape. Maps and planned routes are provided to help visitors with levels of difficulty and equipment and clothing are available to guests from the hotel's Arc'teryx Bootroom (a necessity for first time or inexperienced hikers such as myself that do not know what to expect). After an exciting first day of hiking, it was time to relax and enjoy the main leisure facilities. A large swimming pool, gym, and sauna can be found in the main building whilst the Thermal Experience is available at the new spa facilities; including a heated indoor and outdoor pool (with stunning views of the grounds), adjoining outside relaxation space with open fire and Finnish sauna. Inside contains an ice fountain and foot bubble spa, Himalaya salt steam, lava and herbal saunas, mineral steam bath and treatment therapy rooms to rejuvenate and recharge.
My stay at Brimstone was one that I will never forget. Whilst I am not the biggest enthusiast of experiencing the natural world, Brimstone allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and experience the true beauty of the great outdoors. The service was immaculate and staff were always on hand to help. The new spa facilities are everything that you could need and I just wish I could have experienced the sunset in the outdoor pool, every single day.
Next time you are looking to go on holiday, just remember that there is so much on our doorstep that we take for granted. The Lake District is a place that I will be returning to very soon.
