Interviewing Daniel Hopwood

Posted on 07 January 2017

Taking time out of his insanely busy schedule, I had the pleasure of interviewing the king of interior design, former President for the British Institute of Interior Design and judge on the BBC's widely popular show, The Great Interior Design Challenge, Daniel Hopwood. During the interview, I got to find out a little more about his amazing studio, a surprising interior design challenge dream of his own, and of course, some design advice from the expert. Accompanying the interview are shots of a recent project from Studio Hopwood, a stunning one bedroom project titled "The Rovers Return" in Chiswick, London.

How would you describe your signature style?

"Style at Daniel Hopwood is inspired by the client. We work closely with our clients to help define their taste and understand their lifestyle in order to make bespoke interiors, that why on our web site all the projects are very different from each other."

Where do you go to find inspiration?

"Combine our clients taste and the building they live in and that’s our inspiration. All at Daniel Hopwood have a high level of training and passion for design, our knowledge and research ensures a unique interior for all of our clients."

What is the most challenging part of the design process?

"We don’t find the design process challenging we find it fascinating, that’s why we are designers. Good design is the result of a design process, working on intuition is like working blindly.

Is there a particular area of the house that you love to design the most and why?

"The guest loo is always fun as clients often give us free reign, it gives a chance to show what is possible and it’s the one space in a home that a visitor will scrutinise closely."

Is there a particular area of design that you have not worked in but would love to explore?

I’ve always fancied doing a funeral home. Presently they portray death as a Victorian concept, they need to be re-addressed and made relevant to today.

What would you say is the most common interior design fail that people make?

The most common interior design mistake I most often see is not using a professional designer. The results ie the mistakes are expensive ones, use a professional and get it right first time. Check out the BIID website to get the right one. If not, come and join us on a masterclass to show you how to get design right.

Where would you like to see interior design trends move to next?

"Avoid trends at all costs,  a good home should evolve and stand the test of time acquiring patina and provenance, just make sure that everything you put in it are either useful or beautiful and preferably both."

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

"Same as the advice I would give to any young designer, if you have it stick with it."

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

"Everyday is a highlight, I am always thankful for having a great studio doing what we want to do."

What is next for Daniel Hopwood?

"I haven’t a clue. That’s half the fun"

Hi there, love this concept and design. Can you please confirm where the light fixture over the dining table is from?

    Thank you,

I really like this interview for a couple reasons. First, I just had my apartment refurnished and designed by a company called Furnishr (http://furnishr.com). They really understood where I was coming from because I didn’t, to be honest. It’t nice to hear from designers like this and see how they think because my thoughts are not as organized when a whole room isn’t presented to me. I guess my imagination isn’t as great as everyone else. Second, this work is absolutely beautiful..From the colors of the walls to the furnishing inside. Amazing.
