Assemblage at Firmdale

Mixing striking art and design against the luxurious backdrop of a Firmdale hotel is my idea of Heaven. Serving cocktails by the pool, guests were invited to view the artwork on display and meet some of the artists to discuss their works. With a live band, the whole event had a fascinating LA vibe that only a hotel such as Firmdale could recreate. With the music playing and cocktails being served, it was time for me to make my way around the poolside to discover the brilliant artwork on display.
Curated by India Dickinson, the diverse collections on display for the evening consisted of works from Alex Templeton-Ward, Lea Marcaccini, Ruby Kean, Ivo Morrison, Jessica Illsley, Daisy Dickinson & Julia and Noriko Okaku. A personal favourite, and one that I always associate with Firmdale Hotels is the work from Ruby Kean (first image at the top of the post) with her fascinating 3D works of layered images contained within a simple white frame.
During the event, I took my viewers on a live tour around the pool so that they could take a look at some of the fantastic works that were on display. This live tour can be viewed at the bottom of this page. Another artist that caught my eye as well as having a fantastic response from the live tour was Noriko Okaku with her mesmerising video art projected on the wall at one end of the swimming pool. The videos contained many montages of vintage style animations on display as if they were moving collages, creating miniature stories, constantly evolving and changing over time.
Those familiar with the Firmdale brand will recognise that many of the artists featured and works displayed have a familiarity to the style of the hotels. Artwork is an incredibly important part of the brand and no matter where you look within the beautiful spaces of the hotel, you will notice hidden treasures and unique styles to analyse and admire in your own way. Owner and design director, Kit Kemp has always been about exposing and nurturing new talent, giving young creatives a platform to exhibit their works whilst also keeping the hotel spaces unique and fun places to explore.
