Masterpiece London 2016
Posted on 30 August 2016
As London prepares to showcase the very best in design, I take a look at one of my favourite events of the year, Masterpiece London 2016. For any of you that have visited the fair before, you will understand that the level of luxury on display is unlike anything seen before. Located at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in a specially created building, the fair has everything on offer from artwork and antiques to yachts and champagne. Invited by the incredible team at LINLEY, I wanted to share with you just a few of my discoveries from my unforgettable visit.
I had the great pleasure if being introduced to the breathtaking collection of designs from Lalique, including the collaborative piece, a beautiful piano designed by Lalique, on display at the Steinway & Sons stand. The location was the perfect setting for the collection, not only to promote the collaboration but because these are two traditional and iconic brands, known for their incredible luxury, style and attention to detail that continuously evolves, impressing and wowing buyers, guests and passers by to this day.
It would not be Masterpiece without the eye catching, extravagant sculptural designs and this year had some very impressive pieces to choose from. Rise of Heart, designed by Wallace Chan is a sculpture of a Peony flower, surrounded by butterflies. Constructed from Ruby, Amethyst, Citrine and Titanium, the design was most definitely a crowd pleaser, stopping everyone in their tracks that passed the flower to admire the mesmerising detail.
I spent such a long time at Adrian Sassoon, discovering and admiring the immense collection of treasures on display. Everything from small intricate traditional pieces to large contemporary designs were on display in a beautifully curated stand. A personal favourite of mine was an amber, jewell like creation from Akane Yamamoto (as seen above), etched with a floral grid patten, transforming in the light. It felt as if it had been discovered on an archaeological dig, a treasure hidden away for thousands of years.
Another year over and I cannot believe that Masterpiece managed to better itself against the impressive 2015 fair. Click HERE to view the highlights from the 2015 event.
