Moooi London Showroom Visit

Posted on 01 November 2016

After launching a temporary showroom at Sea Containers House back in 2015 for the London Design Festival, I knew it was only a matter of time until Moooi pulled up a chair and settled in to London for good. Earlier this year, the brand announced to much excitement, the launch of their permanent flagship showroom just off Oxford Street, a space where Moooi are able to show off their incredible products the way that they are supposed to be seen.

A few weeks back, with camera in hand, I went to explore the showroom and discover the incredible products and designs in person. With so many inspirational and fascinating designs to grab my attention, I spent hours in the showroom taking photos and discussing designs with staff. What I love about Moooi designs is their eccentricity. You can tell a Moooi design from one single glance, an achievement that many businesses are so eager to achieve.

A collection that I was immediately drawn to was Delft Blue. A series of twelve ceramic vases designed by Marcel Wanders. Each vase design is entirely different to the next with many of the ceramics displaying an intricate blue floral print, similar to the iconic 18th century Blue Willow chinoiserie pattern that many of us have fallen in love with. My favourite piece has to be the No. 3 design which can be seen above with it's oval shape, singular base and three separate openings at the top.

Lighting is one of the most popular areas for Moooi with their displays and designs appearing everywhere from private galleries to luxurious five start hotels. Upon inspection, you may notice something rather intriguing about some of the more popular designs, the wiring, or lack of wiring to be more specific. Pendants such as the Raimond lamps (directly below and above) and the Heracleum collection (third and fourth images from the top) all use the housing of the design to conduct electricity, allowing styles to be elaborate and detailed without being constrained by internal or hidden wiring.

Recent additions to the range include the striking new rug designs, instantly recognisable to the Moooi brand. These fascinating designs have been created with a revolutionary printing technique that allows the company to print almost any custom design, creating a new level to customisable luxury. What is refreshing to see is a company that refuses to stand still, constantly looking to develop and expand their reach within the design world.
