The Radisson Collection Hotel, Strand Stockholm reopens after an impressive renovation by Swedish Architectural Studio Wingårdhs.
The Radisson Collection Hotel, Strand Stockholm is a landmark hotel located on the waterfront of Nybroviken, opened initially to coincide with the 1912 Olympics. The impressive hotel has recently completed an extensive renovation by Swedish Architectural Studio Wingårdhs to transform it into a luxurious design destination, including 170 guest rooms, lobby, meeting rooms and a new 'landmark' restaurant and bar for guests and members of the public to enjoy.
'The Strand' is the hotel's crown jewel; an all-day restaurant and bar that seats up to 200 guests, divided into three main areas. At the heart of the building is the impressive atrium space with a dramatic lighting installation, containing hundreds of lighting elements hung at varying heights. Evolving throughout the day and into the evening, the installation resembles a starry nights sky for guests to sit back and enjoy. A large bar splits the atrium restaurant space from the intimate lounge and dining area on the other side, featuring large arched windows that look out across Nybroviken, connecting the interior to the excitement of the surrounding area. A smaller bar sits in the corner of the building with an additional entrance, providing a favourite spot for after-work drinks, private parties and events.
Throughout the design, Wingårdhs creates a relaxed environment suitable for guests to eat, drink, work and socialise. Incorporating a variety of seating, including long sofas and comfortable lounge chairs upholstered in soft velvets and warm-toned colours, guests make the place their own, defining each of the interior's unique personalities.
A focus of the redesign has been to highlight the unique details of the historic building while creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Alongside natural materials such as oak and walnut, the interiors, feature soft textures and rich colours that echo the colouring from the surrounding buildings in the vicinity. The studio has introduced a custom grey- toned colour ‘Strand Grey’ which runs throughout the hotel which adapts and responds to the colouring of the upholstery, accessories and artwork within each space. Design classics such as the 2097 chandelier from FLOS and the Swan chair from Fritz Hansen are also prominent within the communal areas of the hotel as well as the guest rooms.
Radisson has worked closely with the local firm 'Young Art' commissioning young artists and designers to create and showcase their works throughout the hotel’s lobby, guestrooms and restaurant. The works include pieces across varying mediums such as photography and paintings, all prominently displayed for guests and visitors to admire and purchase. The passion for art and platform created by the hotel for new talent further establishes the Strand Stockholm as a design destination, continually evolving over time.
For the refurbishment of the guest rooms, Wingårdhs repurposed existing furniture and fittings such as the doors and floors, working meticulously to refresh each piece to fit in with the hotel’s new aesthetic while maintaining the hotel’s original and much-loved character and charm. Creating a relaxed and homely atmosphere, the studio uses dark tones and rich wooden materials throughout the guest rooms with the exception of the windows which are surrounded in white, luring guests to take in the beautifully framed views of Nybroviken.
Having the incredible opportunity of experiencing the hotel first hand, it is beautiful to see a design icon such as the Strand, showcasing its impressive history while embracing the future of design. Wingårdhs have carefully restored the building's original features, alining them with a fresh, contemporary feel that will help write the structures next chapter. In a competitive hotel industry that continually evolves to its guest's needs, very few stand out for the quality of design and integration into the surrounding city as much as the Radisson Collection's latest addition does. The Strand's story is only just beginning.
