With all the amenities expected from a luxury hotel, it is time to explore what makes this destination so special.

One of three man-made forts, built as a line of defence against enemy attacks on the Solent and Portsmouth, many of the structure's original features remain, being surrounded by luxurious new additions and fine finishes that have enabled it to transform into an island retreat, complete with bars, restaurants, hot pool, sauna and firepit for the ultimate luxury getaway.

The experience officially starts away from Spitbank on the mainland, checking in at the departure lounge located at Gunwharf Quays. Toasting with a welcome drink, guests are guided to a private launch as they make the short voyage across to Spitbank Fort. Set against the clear ocean and open sky, the structure is a symbol of strength and a feat of engineering, adding drama and provoking excitement upon arrival.

There are eight suites available, divided into three categories and styles. The Two Admiral suites offer the largest space for guests, offering luxurious necessities for those looking for a little pamper time. The suites have been decorated with a collection of beautiful vintage furniture pieces, carefully paired with nautical decoration and references of the Fort's rich past. No two Commodore suites are the same, each with their own unique personality and style. There is also a waterbed option available depending on guests preference. With exposed brickwork and impressive arched ceilings, there is nothing more exciting than waking up to the sound and sight of the sea directly at your window. The final suite is the Crow's nest, one of multi-use function rooms that can, on request be transformed into a spacious bedroom suite with floor to ceiling windows and a private balcony to walk out on and absorb the mesmerising views.

Dining under the vaulted ceiling of the Officer's Mess dining space with a view out across the sea towards Portsmouth Harbour and the Spinnaker Tower is a truly unforgettable experience come rain or shine. The brickwork and original ironwork add such a depth and drama this space that it is almost impossible to forget where you are, and why would anyone want to? Victory Bar, complete with its very own Laurent Perrier Champagne station and soft upholstered lounge chairs to sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of bubbly, there is no shortage of entertainment, this spot is also the perfect place for a live band to play with incredible acoustics

The Victory Bar comes with its very own Laurent Perrier Champagne station and has plenty of soft upholstered lounge chairs to sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of bubbly.  There is no shortage of entertainment and the relaxing atmosphere makes it the perfect place to socialise after a busy day of sea activities.

The Wine Cave is another must-visit destination, defined by its unusual shape and dramatic mood lighting. Suited to small groups, the cave can offer private dining experiences, wine tasting sessions and even a quiet drinks space away from the group to enjoy a cocktail or two with a friend or loved one.

Being surrounded by the sea off the British Coast, guests have to make the most of the great outdoors and jaw-dropping views with some of the Fort's most glamorous facilities. Whether it is raising a glass in the hot pool on a cool evening, watching the sunset or toasting marshmallows over the firepit with the twinkling lights of the mainland on the horizon, there is something to suit all. The roof and courtyard also contain a sauna, sun loungers, lighthouse and even a space to fly a kite. If you are going to visit Spitbank, you have to do it all.

At over one hundred and fifty years old, it is fantastic to see these iconic Forts experiencing a new exciting chapter in their history. What could have been left to fall into disrepair as they nearly did, many of us will be so thankful that someone was able to see potential in a structure that has an impressive past. Now being cared for and evolving to new heights of luxury, I hope that everyone has the opportunity to visit and take in the surroundings for an experience that they will never forget.
